New World Notes - Naomi Klein: Capitalism vs. the Climate (First of two parts)

10/07/2014 12:00 pm
10/08/2014 9:00 pm

This week on New World Notes: radio program #344, October 7, 2014, from 12:00 to 12:30 p.m. (and on Wednesday from 8:30 to 9:00 p.m.), host Kenneth Dowst excerpts a recent talk by writer and activist, Naomi Klein.

Klein discusses the ideas of her new book, This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. the Climate.

She argues that any real solution to the climate crisis will have to overturn four factors that are making the crisis worse. These are privatization, deregulation, "austerity," and "free trade" agreements. These factors--pillars of neoliberal economic policy--well deserve overturning on their own (lack of) merits. Because of the climate crisis, transforming the global economy for the better now seems much more possible than it did in years past.

An interesting and (basically) upbeat talk with many good examples.

Klein spoke in Montreal on September 16, 2014. Original recording courtesy of CKUT-FM, Montreal. K.D. has lightly edited the original for radio broadcast.

New World Notes is produced under the auspices (Latin for "first floor") of WWUH-FM, a community service of the University of Hartford.
