New World Notes - Naomi Klein: Capitalism vs. the Climate (Second of two parts)

10/14/2014 12:00 pm
10/15/2014 9:00 pm

This week on New World Notes: radio program #345, October 14, 2014, from 12:00 to 12:30 p.m. (and on Wednesday from 8:30 to 9:00 p.m.), host Kenneth Dowst excerpts a recent talk by writer and activist, Naomi Klein.

Klein discusses the ideas of her new book, This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. the Climate.

She argues that any real solution to the climate crisis will have to overturn four factors that are making the crisis worse. These are privatization, deregulation, "austerity," and "free trade" agreements. These factors--pillars of neoliberal economic policy--well deserve overturning on their own (lack of) merits. Because of the climate crisis, transforming the global economy for the better now seems much more possible than it did in years past.

This week Klein focuses on popular movements that have built alternative, environmentally friendly utilities. And popular movements that at least have hindered environmentally destructive ones such as new pipelines. She shows that the fight to save the climate and the fight for democracy are, to a remarkable extent, the same fight.

With additional commentary by K.D. and a song by David Rovics.

An interesting and (basically) upbeat talk with many good examples.

Klein spoke in Montreal on September 16, 2014. Original recording courtesy of CKUT-FM, Montreal. K.D. has lightly edited the original for radio broadcast.
