Join Beyond the Classroom host, David Schonfeld, on Thursday, July 31, 2014 from 12 noon to 12:30 p.m (repeated at 7:30 p.m.).

In Program #47, David talks to Dr. Robert D. Celmer.

Bob Celmer is Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Hartford.

In the first segment, Program #46, Bob talked about his musical background, his interest in jazz and his association with WWUH Radio; his engineering background and concentration in acoustics; the field of acoustics and its importance; the scope of Hartford's undergraduate Acoustics program; its two degree paths including a unique music-and-acoustics hybrid; careers in acoustics; the 6 branches of the field, as taught at Hartford: architectural acoustics, musical acoustics, environmental acoustics, hearing and psychoacoustics, audio, and noise control; the value of including an acoustician in an architectural design team.

In today's segment, Bob talks about the causes of motor vehicle noise; the elements of sound: amplitude, frequency, and time; what causes some sounds to be pleasant; consonance and dissonance; digital sound encoding and compression; advances in sound reproduction; acoustical considerations in theater design.
