Jazz trumpeter Charles Tolliver, who made his professional debut with saxophonist Jackie McLean in the mid-1960s, remains a creative force in jazz at age 72. He has worked with some of the most important improvisers of the past 50 years, including Horace Silver, Sonny Rollins, and Herbie Hancock; and has led numerous bands of his own--both small and large ensembles.

Tolliver visits the University of Hartford on Tuesday, April 22 and will offer a free master class, open to the public, at noon in Millard Auditorium at the Hartt School building. The University is at 200 Bloomfield Ave, West Hartford.

Before the master class, Tolliver will join Chuck Obuchowski for a live interview on WWUH during the 10 o'clock hour. Chuck will be playing recordings from throughout Tolliver's career, including some of the classic Jackie McLean sessions, during Out Here & Beyond, which airs from 9 a.m. to noon.

On Tuesday at 7:30 p.m., Tolliver will take part in a collaborative concert with the University of Hartford Concert Jazz Ensemble (Big Band), under the direction of Chris Casey. The Ensemble will be performing six of Tolliver's compositions, and he will be one of the featured soloists. Tuesday evening's concert is free, and will also take place in Millard Auditorium at the Hartt School on the University of Hartford campus.
